Whether you’re offering companionship, supporting our Grief Services offerings, working at the TRU Thrift Shop, or helping behind the scenes, , you are an integral part of how we show up for our community.

Ways to Serve

Volunteer roles vary in setting, time commitment, and level of interaction — all grounded in compassion and respect. We’ll help you find a role that fits your comfort level, interests, and availability.

  • Patient and Family Support:
    • Friendly visits, reading, conversation, and simple activities
    • Providing a calm presence so caregivers can rest or run errands
    • Compassionate end-of-life companionship (“11th Hour” companionship) offered by specially trained volunteers, with full support from staff
  • Grief Services Support:
    • Event check‑in, room setup, and materials preparation
    • Helping create a welcoming, safe environment for groups and remembrance gatherings
  • TRU PACE Day Center:
    • Supporting joy, routine, and connection through social activities
    • Mealtime support, crafts, music, games, and group activities
  • TRU Hospice Thrift Shop:
    • Donations intake, sorting, pricing, merchandising, and cashier support
    • Every role helps fund care for local families
  • Administrative and Special Projects:
    • Data entry, mailings, phone outreach, and education materials
    • Behind-the-scenes support that keeps care running smoothly

Getting Started

Starting is simple — and supported.

Submit an application.

Interview and placement with Volunteer Services.

Training and health clearance (as required for the role).

Complete a shadow shift and receive ongoing support

We welcome younger volunteers and community groups in specific roles.

  • Limited roles for teens with a parent or guardian (shop or events)
  • Internships or practicums for eligible academic programs (by arrangement)

One-day or recurring group service projects (shop, events, or facilities)

Specialty programs offer unique ways to connect and serve.

  • Veteran-to-veteran visits and pinning ceremonies honoring service
  • Music volunteers and community singing groups at select events
  • Handmade comfort items (shawls, blankets) coordinated by staff

Ask About Specialty Programs

  • Patient-facing roles: 2-4 hours per week for at least six months; TB test and vaccines per policy
  • Thrift shop and administrative roles: Flexible shifts; lifting limits vary by role
  • Events: As scheduled

  • Volunteers do not provide medical care, administer medications, or offer financial or transportation support
  • Concerns are promptly shared with staff so care remains coordinated and safe
